Historically, calabash gourds were used as storage vessels primarily for water, but have also been used to store and carry wines, oils, and in the case of Japanese Hyōtan bottles, medicinal materials. Glass and ceramic artists have used the gourd bottle as inspiration for their own bottles and vessels for as long as the craft has existed.
